5 minutes with Jane

December 08 2017

Jane Johnstone joined Ucan Recycling back in April this year as our IT Disposal Collections Co-ordinator and Senior Administrator. As part of her role she is responsible for the smooth running of our redundant IT collections from organisations all over the country. Her professional and methodical approach has already made in roads in to making Ucan a more organised place and she is recognised by everyone as a valuable member of the Ucan team.

We wanted to know more about Jane and thought we would share our findings with you all.

Where did you work before? YORKSHIRE MEDIATION in Leeds

How long were you there? 14 YEARS

What attracted you to the role here? INITIALLY A MEANS TO AN END. REDUNDANCY MADE JOB SEEKING A PRIORITY. AN EX-COLLEAGUE WAS ALREADY EMPLOYED BY UCAN AND, WITH AN INTEREST IN RECYCLING AND UPCYCLING, I WAS ENCOURAGED BY WHAT I HEARD.

EQUALLY IMPORTANT, I KNEW UCAN TO BE A COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY WITH A VESTED INTEREST IN HELPING THE LONG TERM UNEMPLOYED BACK INTO WORK. A GOOD FIT WHEN YOU EMERGE FROM A CHARITABLE BACKGROUND WHICH FOCUSED ON UPSKILLING PEOPLE TO VOLUNTEER IN THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY.

HAVING WORKED IN MEDIATION FOR MANY YEARS I KNEW UCAN WOULD BE A STIMULATING CHANGE WHILST PROVIDING NEW CHALLENGES.

What are the best bits about working here?

BASED ON A FARM, APART FROM THE DRIVE DOWN INTO THE VALLEY EACH MORNING AND THE OCCASIONAL BRAY OF A HORSE AS IT DEMANDS RELEASE FROM IT’S STABLE, THE VARIETY THAT EACH DAY BRINGS IS ONE OF THE BEST BITS ABOUT WORKING FOR UCAN. FROM BOOKING IN FREE COLLECTIONS TO INDUCTING PEOPLE ON WORKPLACEMENT PROGRAMMES AND OBSERVING THEIR PROGRESS OR APPLYING FOR NEW LICENCES FROM THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY; UCAN PRESENTS IT ALL.

IF YOU’VE EVER WONDERED WHERE ALL THOSE UNUSED OR DISCARDED KETTLE LEADS; SETTOP BOXES, PCs, LAPTOPS AND MONITORS GO TO – WORRY NOT – UCAN HAS IT COVERED RESPONSIBILY. FOR MANY YEARS I STOCKPILED OLD HARDDRIVES, RELUCTANT TO RISK CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION STRAYING INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN. HAD I KNOWN ABOUT AND UNDERSTOOD UCAN’S SANITISATION PROCESSES MY PREVIOUS PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT WOULD HAVE ENJOYED A LITTLE MORE PRECIOUS STORGAE SPACE. THAT AS WELL AS WORKING COOPERATIVELY WITH A LOCAL NOT FOR PROFIT COMPANY WITH BOTH EYES ON THE FUTURE OF OUR ENVIRONMENT.

How would you sum up a typical day here in 4 words?

STIMULATING, REWARDING, CHALLENGING, INTERESTING

SOMETHING SURPRISING: I HAVE FLOWN FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF SOUND. NOW I WANT TO BARREL ROLL IN A SUPERSONIC JET – WHICH WILL MAKE MY DAUGHTER LAUGH OUT LOUD – I WAS GREEN IN THE FACE AFTER SHE FORCED ME ONTO A FAIRGROUND RIDE…
